How does the Photoshop PSD layers export work?

When you select a bitmap projection such as Cubical or Spherical, one of the available image format choices you have is “Photoshop (PSD)”.
When this option is selected, Stitcher will render the panorama at the chosen projection setting, but instead of producing a single blended panorama, it will create an Adobe Photoshop document in PSD format that contains separate layers for each individual image contained in the source Stitcher project. Each image will retain the necessary distortion, and a blending mask will be applied in a non-destructive manner to each image. The result is a multi-layer Photoshop file that, when all layers are set to visible, perfectly replicates the perfectly blended results a single image would display, but retains the maximum flexibility in editing afforded by having each image in its own layer, making it very simply to do things such as fixing artifacts or eliminating ghosted areas.

Please note, that rendering to PSD Layers takes significantly longer than a regular image file, and also produces much larger files. Also, Adobe Photoshop imposes a 30,000 pixel size limit (in any dimension) on a multi layer PSD document.
