The rendered image gets a big black area in the middle.

This occurs with panoramas which do not reach 360 degrees and because you have not centered your panorama in the working area, before making the render. To get the image well centered in the rendered window, you have to select an image at the center of the panorama, press '=' or right click 'Look At' and then render it. You won't have this black area at the center. It will now be at each side, but you can suppress it by defining a Render Area.
